Mary Tamm dies, aged 62

Mary Tamm, who played Romana in Doctor Who, sadly passed away this morning at the age of 62.

Tamm, born on 22 March 1950 in Yorkshire, was of Estonian decent and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Before her appearance on Doctor Who, she starred in a number of films throughout the1970s including The Odessa File in 1973 and The Likely Lads in 1976.

Mary Tamm was initially reluctant to play Romana in Doctor Who when the role was offered to her in 1978. However, producer Graham Williams assured her that Romana was a much stronger, independent woman than the traditional companion. Tamm also spoke to her Doctor Who predecessor, Louise Jameson, about what it was like to work on the series before accepting the role.

The actress played Romana in 1978/79 Key To Time series which consisted of six stories - The Ribos Operation, The Pirate Planet, The Stones of Blood, The Androids of Tara, The Power of Kroll and The Armageddon Factor. Tamm left the series after just one year because she believed that the character could not be developed any further.

Following her time playing Romana, Mary Tamm starred in two BBC dramas - The Treachery Games in 1980 and The Assassination Run in 1981. In 1984, she had a role in the BBC Two sitcom The Hello, Goodbye Man.

Between 1993 and 1996, she appeared in Brookside and starred in four episodes of Eastenders in 2009.

Her extensive acting career also includes roles in Doghouse (2009), Wire in the Blood (2008), Doctors (2000), Holby City (2006), Jonathan Creek (2001), The Bill (1991, 2001), Heatbeat (1997), Casualty (1986) and Bergerac (1984).

Her association with Doctor Who has also continued, with Tamm reprising the role of Romana in several Big Finish audio dramas. She discussed her time on Doctor Who for the special features on the 2007 DVD release of The Key to Time.

Mary Tamm passed away on 26th June 2012 following an 18 month battle with cancer.

Tom Baker said: "She was a darling companion and wonderfully witty and kind.I'm so sorry to hear of her death."

Tamm's agent of 22 years Barry Langford commented:  "She was a fantastic actress. She played stage parts of such range, parts that would take your breath away. She could play any role, and do so wonderfully."

He added that Mary had been saddened by the deaths of Elisabeth Sladen and Angharad Rees: "All of these people who she knew were going."

She leaves behind her husband Marcus Ringrose, daughter Lauren and grandson Max.

Ringrose said: "Mary was truly beautiful in every way. On set and offstage, her earthy northern humour and self-deprecating wit brightened every occasion. We will miss her every day."

Matt Smith in Bert & Dickie

Matt Smith makes a return to the small screen tonight to star as 1948 Olympics gold medalist Bert Bushell in the one-off BBC drama Bert & Dickie.

Set three years after the end of the Second World War, Bert Bushnell and Dickie Burnell are two men who are thrown together just five weeks before the final of the 1948 London Olympics. Both men must compete to overcome not only their physical and emotional limits but they must also rise above distinctions of birth and class.

Bert and Dickie’s personal battle reflects a much greater struggle as London prepares to host the Olympic Games. Set against the backdrop of a half-destroyed London, the British Olympic Committee refuse to “let the Games die” and convince the Prime Minister that the Olympics could help bring the country back together. With that, the Austerity Olympics are born and Bert and Dickie’s lives are forever changed.

Matt Smith is Bert Bushnell, Sam Hoare is Dickie Burnell, James Frain is Jack Beresford, Douglas Hodge is John Bushnell and Geoffrey Palmer is Charles Burnell.

The 90-minute drama will be broadcast tonight at 8.30pm on BBC One and at 8/7c on BBC America with the alternative title Going for Gold.

Doctor Who Action Figure Set - Victory of the Daleks

Character Options have produced an action figure set dedicated to the 2010 Doctor Who episode Victory of the Daleks. The set consists of Churchill and the Iornside Dalek.

The Doctor has been summoned by his old friend Winston Churchill but in the Cabinet War Rooms, far below the streets of blitz-torn London, he finds his oldest enemy waiting for him... The Daleks are back! And can Churchill really be in league with them?

The Ironsides were designed to be the perfect warrior, after the concept was dreamt up by Professor Bracewell, seemingly from nowhere. In actual fact, these new weapons which Winston Churchill wanted to use to win the war were in fact Daleks, who had fallen back through time and needed the Doctor to be able to create the new Dalek race. Professor Bracewell was in fact an android built by the Daleks, part of a complex trap to lure the Doctor back to where they were hiding, so he would unwittingly allow the Dalek race to be reborn thanks to his testimony. The new Daleks appeared, and exterminated the Ironsides.

Contents: 1 x Winston Churchill action figure, 1 x Ironside Dalek action figure with Tea Tray plus extra accessories!

The figures are on sale now at the price of £26.99 (Forbidden Planet online).

Doctor Who and Torchwood help BBC profits rise

International sales of shows including Doctor Who and Torchwood led to a year-on-year growth in BBC Worldwide profits.

The commercial arm of the BBC recorded an 8% rise in headline profit to £155m (2010/11: £144m).  Profit before tax of £104m (2010/11: £92m excluding gains on disposals) is up 13% on a like for like basis. The company grew headline sales by 5% to £1,085m in the 12 months to 31 March 2012 (2010/11: £1,030m).

Doctor Who and Torchwood - along with Top Gear, Frozen Planet, Spooks, Sherlock, Planet Earth and Natural World - were the top selling programmes, each of which sold in over 100 markets. International sales of BBC programmes as a percentage of the total increased by 9 percentage points to 64% (2010/11: 56%).

As previously reported, Doctor Who Series 6 was the most-downloaded TV programme on the US version of iTunes in 2011.

The 2012 Doctor Who Annual was the "stand out" performer in the Children's book category.

In overall terms of merchandise sales, Doctor Who now has around 100 separate licensees across a wide range of product categories and was the fourth biggest licence in the market for boys aged 5-14.

The top five brands - Doctor Who, Top Gear, Lonely Planet, Dancing with the Stars and BBC Earth – account for 30% of company headline sales.

BBC press release confirms Doctor Who Series 7 details

Following last week's San Diego Comic-Con, the BBC Media Centre have published a press release confirming new Doctor Who episode titles along with comments from Steven Moffat.

Press release:

Doctor Who is set to take on one of his biggest monsters to date, as the BBC announces at ComicCon that episode two of the new series will be called Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, with episode three confirmed as A Town Called Mercy.

Requiring one of the largest sets to date to house the prehistoric creatures, Dinosaurs On A Spaceship will follow the equally epic Asylum Of The Daleks, which kicks-off the show’s highly anticipated return to BBC One in the autumn.

Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory, the episode will also co-star Mark Williams from the Fast Show as Rory’s dad, Brian, and Rupert Graves from Sherlock. Dinosaurs On A Spaceship was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein.

The BBC also confirmed today that episode three, filmed on location in Spain, will be a western entitled A Town Called Mercy. Written by Toby Whithouse and again directed by Saul Metzstein, the episode co-stars Adrian Scarborough and Ben Browder.

Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer, said: “Dinosaurs On A Spaceship - what more do you need! The Doctor will come face to face with some of the most monstrous creatures evolution has ever produced, on some of the most monstrous sets we've ever built. We took one look at Chris Chibnall's brilliant script and said to ourselves 'We're going to need a bigger corridor'.

"And Toby Whithouse's A Town Called Mercy takes us into a genre Doctor Who hasn't attempted since the Sixties - it's a full blooded western. We knew from the start we need some serious location shooting for this one, and given the most iconic American setting imaginable, there was only one place to go - Spain."

Both episodes were shot earlier this year, with Dinosaurs On A Spaceship filmed in Cardiff.

The show returns with a run of five followed by the Christmas special and a further eight episodes in 2013.

BBC Worldwide and The Wand Company announce Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver TV Remote

Following many rumors and much speculation, BBC Worldwide have announced that The Wand Company have produced a model of The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver which acts a TV Remote Control.

Press release:

The Wand Company - known for developing the World’s first infrared remote control magic wand and BBC Worldwide today reveal the must-have accessory for Doctor Who fans – the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control.

Ever since Patrick Troughton, the Second Doctor, first produced it from his jacket, the sonic screwdriver has been the Doctor’s most trusted tool. Now, for the first time, Doctor Who fans have the opportunity to bring the Time Lord’s extremely cool and iconic gadget into their own homes.

A high quality metal replica of the Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver currently used by the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, the new Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control is a gesture-based universal remote control that utilises infrared (IR) technology to manipulate almost all earth-based home entertainment systems - from TVs and iPod docks to DVD/Blu-ray players and beyond.

With a green flashing tip and an impressive four operational modes – including a practice mode – and three memory banks, a total of 39 commands can be stored in the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, giving aspiring Time Lord’s the option of operating multiple home entertainment devices with different flicks of the wrist.

Control is straightforward – even for humans. The Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control works through a series of 13 short gestures, such as rotating, flicking or tapping, and a guided set-up procedure uses spoken prompts to match gestures to commands learned from existing remote controls.

And, for those fans who wish to transport a little more of The Doctor into their own homes, the FX operational mode features a range of authentic vintage Doctor Who sound effects.

All unauthorised alien usage of his device can be avoided as the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control comes with an inbuilt security setting - a three digit PIN can be set by the primary user - offering ultimate human control of the ultimate alien device.

As time travel is not readily available to most humans, Doctor Who fans will have to wait until August 31st 2012 to own a Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, when it is available from UK retailers.

Character Options to release Doctor Who Talking Daleks set

Character Options have produced a series of six talking Daleks - each model with a different design from 1963 to 2005.

The Daleks were created by the Kaled scientist, Davros as travel machines. He had deduced that the years of radiation and chemical poisoning from an ongoing war would lead his race to mutate into immobile organisms. The Dalek travel machines would house these creatures and allow the Kaleds to survive. However, in the course of his experiments, Davros deliberately removed what he considered to be debilitating emotions from the mutants and a force of evil was spawned! The Daleks were born without any ability to feel compassion or pity and were motivated only by hate, fear and an implacable belief that they were the superior creatures in the Universe.

Recreate scenes from Doctor Who with these highly detailed 5" poseable Dalek action figures. Featuring the following six Daleks, modelled accurately on some of the famous Daleks from past episodes. Bronze Dalek (2005), Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964), Power of the Daleks (1966), Revelation of the Daleks (1985), Planet of the Daleks (1973) and Death to the Daleks (1974). Each Dalek includes sound FX and speech by era! Collect them all!. Six to Collect. Requires 3 x 1.5V Batteries included. For ages 5 years and over.

The Daleks will be available individually or as a set from 22 August 2012.

The real life mother and daughter duo are set to play the same relationship in Doctor Who, with their characters holding a dark secret.

The episode features Matt Smith, incoming companion Jenna Louise-Coleman and will be directed by Saul Metzstein.

Mark Gatiss has written a gift of a script and an on-screen relationship between Ma and I that is truly delicious. We have never before worked together because the offers have not been tempting, but when such a funny and original script comes through you know the time has come.”

Steven Moffat, executive producer and head writer on Doctor Who, says: “Dame Diana Rigg, Rachael Stirling and a Mark Gatiss script - a combination of talents you could only get in Doctor Who. Frankly, I'm terrified already!"
