Piers Wenger leaves Doctor Who

Piers Wenger is to step down from his role as executive producer of Doctor Who, the BBC have announced.

Wenger was appointed as Head of Drama for BBC Wales and an executive producer of Doctor Who alongside Steven Moffat and Beth Willis following the departure of Julie Gardner.

Piers played an active role in the casting of Matt Smith as The Doctor, and has also produced Doctor Who Confidential and The Adventure Games.

Away from the world of Doctor Who, he has worked on Ashes to Ashes, Christopher and His Kind and the relaunch of Upstairs Downstairs, as well as overseeing production of the Bafta-winning Sherlock.

Bethan Jones will serve as acting head of drama for BBC Wales until the end of June when Faith Penhale, from the independent company Kudos, takes up the post as previously announced.

He commented, 'It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to Doctor Who and BBC Drama, and all of the extraordinary people who I have worked with there.'

Piers Wenger be joining Channel 4 as Film4's senior commissioning executive.
