Doctor Who breaks BBC America records

Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut broke BBC America's ratings record when is was broadcast on the channel on Saturday.

The opening episode to Doctor Who's sixth series was watched by 1.3 million viewers on BBC America, beating the previous record set by Matt Smith's debut episode "The Eleventh Hour" in 2010.

Overnight figures indicate that Doctor Who also performed well in the UK with 6.5 million viewers - BBC One's highest rated programme of the day.

Doctor Who continues on Saturday with "Day of the Moon" on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
