Doctor Who: The Snowmen confirmed for Christmas Day at 5.15pm

Doctor Who: The Snowmen will air on Christmas Day at 5.15pm., BBC One have announced.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special, which sees the return of Jenna-Louise Coleman, is scheduled against the final 15 minutes of ITV1's You've Been Framed! and 45 minutes of Emmerdale.

Steven Moffat's festive episode will be preceded on BBC One by BBC News and followed by Strictly Come Dancing.

Christmas Eve 1892, and the falling snow is the stuff of fairytales.

When the fairytale becomes a nightmare and a chilling menace threatens Earth, an unorthodox young governess, Clara, calls on the Doctor for help. But the Doctor is in mourning, reclusive and determined not to engage in the problems of the universe. As old friends return, will the Doctor really abandon humankind or will he fight to save the world – and Christmas – from the icy clutches of this mysterious menace?

Doctor Who: The Snowmen - Radio Times cover

This year's Doctor Who Christmas Special is featured on the cover of the latest issue of the Radio Times.

The magazine has a preview of The Snowmen along with pictures and an interviews with cover stars Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman.

"I think, in one way or another, the Doctor is always attracted to his companion and he's certainly taken by this striking young lady," says Matt Smith.

"The fall of the Ponds had a grave effect on the man. I think he's quite lonely and removed from the universe and not really as engaged as he was, at his best with Amy and Rory. "

Doctor Who Adventure Calendar returns for 2012

The BBC's online Doctor Who Adventure Calendar will be returning for another year, providing a range of exclusive content in the run-up to Christmas.

Over the next few weeks, the official Doctor Who website will be delivering exclusive videos, galleries, exclusive clips and "extra special surprises".

Joseph Lidster, known for his work on Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, has written a story for the calendar, while Jenna-Louise Coleman has given a "revealing interview".

Doctor Who: The Snowmen - Synopsis

The BBC have published the synopsis for this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Snowmen.

Christmas Eve 1892, and the falling snow is the stuff of fairytales.

Video: Christopher Eccleston discusses Doctor Who 50th anniversary, Matt Smith

Christopher Eccleston has discussed the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and Matt Smith in a recent interview with Red Carpet News TV.

The actor, who played the Doctor in 2005, said: "Would I like to be involved? If I told you that, I'd have to shoot you. I've not even thought about it. It's so long ago for me that I haven't even thought about it."

Eccleston also commented on the current Doctor, Matt Smith: "I've not seen him as the Doctor, but I've seen him on stage, he's an excellent actor."

The 297th issue of the weekly Doctor Who Adventures magazine is on sale until Wednesday, 5th December 2012.

The movie-style poster artwork features Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman. The second image is of the Snowmen.

Guest starring Richard E. Grant, Steven Moffat's festive episode is expected to air on Christmas Day on BBC One.

49 years of Doctor Who

Back in 1963...

Exactly 49 years ago today, the world's greatest TV programme, Doctor Who, was born...

At 5.15pm on 23rd November 1963, the first episode of the Doctor Who story An Unearthly Child went out on BBC One. It saw school teachers Ian Chesteron (William Russell) and Barbra Wright (Jacqueline Hill) discovering the TARDIS and a man named the Doctor (Willam Hartnell) along his granddaughter Susan (Carol Ann Ford) in a junk yard in London.

Over the last 49 years, has been a huge success with 11 actors in the lead role, along with numerous companions, making up 229 stories with 789 episodes and a total of 33 series.

... now in 2012

2013 looks set to be a huge year as the programme celebrates half a century since the transmission of An Unearthly Child. There will be the remaining eight episodes of series seven in the Spring featuring Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman. Although there are very few details about the 50th celebrations, Steven Moffat promises that it will be "huge" and "the best year to be a Doctor Who fan." The BBC recently confirmed that Mark Gatiss is scripting a 90-minute drama for BBC Two titled An Adventure In Space And Time which will explore the people who brought the iconic series to BBC One in 1963.

Doctor Who: The Snowmen - new pictures, details

Following the Children in Need prequel and trailer for Doctor Who: The Snowmen, some new details and pictures for this year's Christmas Special have emerged online.

Three new shots featuring Matt Smith's Doctor, Jenna-Louise Coleman's Clara; Vastra, Strax, Jenny and Richard E. Grant's Doctor Simeon have been published.

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said, ‘The Doctor at Christmas is one of my favourite things - but this year it's different.  He's lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angels, and he's not in a good place: in fact, he's Scrooge.  He's withdrawn from the world and no longer cares what happens to it.  So when all of humanity hangs in the balance, can anyone persuade a tired and heartbroken Doctor that it's time to return to the good fight?  Enter Jenna-Louise Coleman…’

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, commented, ‘For this year’s Christmas Special we have the wonderfully villainous Richard E Grant as Doctor Simeon.  As well as lizards, Victorian assassins and deranged warriors from the future all return to convince the Doctor that he should board the TARDIS again and save the world.  Add to that Jenna-Louise Coleman and so begins the Christmas Special, 2012. Doctor Who: Snake Bite - Audiobook

BBC Audio have commissioned Snake Bite, a new Doctor Who audiobook written Scott Handcock and read by Frances Barber.

Doctor Elehri Mussurana has spent a lifetime on her work. She's guarded her pet project close to her chest, letting only one person share her secret - her husband and lab partner Ernst Wharner. As their experiment reaches its final, glorious fruition, they watch in awe as sparks fly in a sealed chamber and specks of sapphire light begin to join together into a shining haze. A wormhole in time and space is being created...But then something unexpected appears inside the swirling vortex: a tall blue box with the words 'POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX' on the side. The TARDIS has arrived in the far future, in a scientific research facility - just as reality is ripped at the seams and the universe tears in two...
